Doggone Good Reading

Building confidence in young readers — one shelter dog at a time.

About the Program

ALL children are invited to read to a Humane Society of Marion County dog on select Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — open to grades 1 through 5.

  • The child must register in advance.
  • Choose the dates you prefer. If the date is available to select, your child will be accepted into the class.
  • There is a maximum of 12 children per session.
  • A parent/guardian must accompany the child and stay at the shelter (in a separate area) while the child reads. Children do better when reading to a non-judgmental dog with no outside criticism.
  • Please sign up each child individually.
